Bruce Blausen, CEO
HQ: Houston, TX
Blausen
Nomination for their: Blausen Human Atlas App for iPhone & iPad
Doctors and nurses have to explain sometimes complex core medical concepts to patients and their family members. With an aging and more video-centric patient population, narrated 3D animations are ideal for this task. The Blausen Human Atlas mobile apps present 300 individual topics covering common medical conditions and treatments in a 1-2 minute animation video, with easy-to-understand 6th -7th grade level narration. Once patients have learned more about their specific condition and fully understood its treatment plan, their anxiety is lower and compliance with forward requirements is better. This results in significant time savings for doctors and nurses in educating their patients, better treatment plan compliance and fewer interruptive and unnecessary visits/ call backs for information.

CareMeridian_Logo
Nomination for their: Community-based Post-Acute Care for the Catastrophically Injured
Patients suffering from traumatic injury or medically complex illness typically are too medically complex to be discharged to traditional post-acute providers and still require significant rehabilitation and nursing to decomplicate and build up the endurance to tolerate more rigorous rehabilitation programs to prepare them to live independently. CareMeridian provides unmatched staff to patient ratio in an intimate, home-like environment more conducive to recovery. Our highly trained rehabilitation teams are comprised of physical, occupational, respiratory and speech therapists, as well as neuropsychological specialists. This interdisciplinary team approach to post-acute care leads to significantly reduced cost savings (less than half) and more positive outcomes with the highest possible opportunity for recovery in non-institutional community-based settings, comparable to a five-star hotel.

HQ: San Fernando, CA

Nomination for their: In-Home Palliative Care
Over the past 10 years, Partners in Care Foundation researchers collaborated with several So. CA hospitals and health care systems to examine the acceptability, effectiveness and efficiency of palliative care programs. The studies showed that patients and families were very satisfied with the consultations, support and medical services they received from palliative care teams. Several demonstrated that in-home palliative care programs can significantly reduce use of medical services and costs care. In clinical trials, overall healthcare costs during the last year of life were 37% - 45% lower for patients receiving palliative services than for those receiving usual care. As a result of this line of research, many areas of the Kaiser Permanente system have adopted an in-home palliative care program as a standard of care and, based on that groundbreaking research, the model is also being widely adopted nationwide.

Teladoc, Inc.

Jason Gorevic, Chief Executive Officer
HQ: Dallas, TX
Teladoc_Logo
Nomination for their: Teladoc Telehealth Solution
Obtaining primary care is becoming increasingly difficult, sometimes taking days or even weeks. These wait periods extend discomfort for the patient with an untreated illness, and, in some cases, drive patients to expensive and unnecessary urgent care or emergency room visits. As more Americans become insured through healthcare reform, this issue will be further exacerbated. Teladoc mitigates these issues with a viable alternative when a traditional visit to a primary care setting is challenging or impractical. As the first and largest provider of telehealth services with three million members and a 97% patient satisfaction rate, the company provides access to U.S.-based, board-certified physicians available 24/7/365 for a variety of medical issues. Teladoc’s ability to resolve patients’ routine medical issues through a timely, cost-effective service, frees healthcare resources to be focused on more serious conditions.

Nomination for their: OVA1(R)
Currently, only one third of women with ovarian cancer have their initial surgery done by a Gynecologic Oncologist, even though the Gynecologic Oncologist is specially trained for this surgery. OVA1 is a new blood test that helps direct women with a high probability of ovarian malignancy to a gynecologic oncologist for their initial surgery. OVA1 is the only FDA-cleared test intended to help physicians identify the likelihood of an ovarian mass being malignant prior to surgery, thus facilitating patient referral to the most appropriate specialist for their initial surgery. Incorporating OVA1 into the physicians preoperative asssessment may also help to reduce the number of second surgeries and therefore reduce overall healthcare costs. In the March 2011 edition of Obstetrics and Gynecology ACOG and SGO published an updated committee opinion indicating that OVA1 appears to improve the predictability of ovarian cancer in women with pelvic masses and said it may be useful for evaluating such patients.
