Advanced Cardiac Scan
Nomination for their: Multifunction Cardiogram (MCG)
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is a leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. CAD is associated with annual costs that are measured in tens of billions of dollars. Advanced Cardiac Scan offers a revolutionary, non-invasive, clinically proven, methodology, the Multifunction Cardio Gram (MCG), to detect CAD. MCG is risk free, stress free and radiation free test to detect myocardial ischemia. MCG provides immediate and more accurate results compared to traditional methods and able to detect ischemia at earlier stages. The results from MCG have been validated in double-blind clinical studies where the system has demonstrated accuracy comparable to coronary angiography (91% overall sensitivity, specificity 83.8%, positive predictive value 77.6%, negative predictive value 92.4%). MCG detects silent ischemia at any stage and severity of CAD, with plaque burden starting 40% single vessel stenosis.

Nomination for their: Awarepoint Real-time Awareness Solutions

Healthcare is an inherently mobile environment – equipment and people are in constant motion. Awarepoint Real-time Awareness Solutions help hospitals map their mobile equipment, patient and staff resources throughout the enterprise; monitor usage and interaction; measure utilization and efficiency; and provide data for process improvement. Awarepoint addresses cost reduction and quality of care in hospitals by focusing on efficiency of the highest cost items in healthcare: equipment resources and people. Awarepoint solutions assist hospital administrators in managing multi-million-dollar budgets, meeting aggressive quality and safety targets, recruiting and retaining employees and driving staff, patient and surgeon satisfaction. Equipment recall notice required a hospital to immediately locate and apply warning labels to nearly 200 IV pumps. Such recalls often require enormous staff time and several weeks. With Awarepoint, staff located and labeled all pumps within 48 hours of recall, using 1/2 the staff typically required.

Nomination for their:  CollabRx ONE Personalized Oncology Research Program
Unfortunately, when cancer patients recur, as many do, there is little recourse beyond trial and error use of other approved agents, assignment to clinical trials, or palliative care. However, it is now possible to generate genome-wide information quickly and economically from a small amount of a patient’s tumor sample. CollabRx ONE is a unique personalized research program that provides oncologists with insights that can help guide their therapy decisions based on the specific genomic characteristics of each patient’s tumor. We present our results including details of the mechanisms that we have found and drugs that address those mechanisms to the oncologist so that they can make a fully informed clinical decision. In ten cases CollabRx ONE obtained actionable hypotheses - available therapies, which had not been considered by the treating oncologists. Matching patients to appropriate therapies could significantly reduce the costs and morbidity of treating patients with expensive targeted therapies that are unlikely to help.

An airport vaccination program helps with preventing the geographic spread of Influenza that occurs when people travel and provides an opportunity for public and community education about the harmful health consequences of Influenza. Vaccinations are over 90% effective in preventing Influenza ,a and more than 2000 travelers and airport employees have been vaccinated at the proto-type airport clinic in the Sacramento International Airport in the last two seasons of Influenza.

LifeModeler, Inc.

Shawn P. McGuan, Founder & CEO
LifeModeler_logo
Nomination for their: LifeMOD Human Simulation Software

Before LifeMOD, the method of developing a new joint replacement system was to manufacture the physical prototype of the proposed design, then surgically implant it in a cadaver specimen. This process would usually take about two or three months. Also before LifeMOD, orthopedic surgeries such as spinal fusion, disk replacement, knee replacement, were performed with very little pre-operative information. Now, LifeModeler provides a human simulation program, LifeMOD, to the orthopedic manufactures to eliminate the traditional cadaver-based design cycle. LifeMOD is a virtual human model, complete with all bones, joints and muscles, which can walk, dance, and golf or virtually perform any human activity. The same technology is also being used by surgeons to create a LifeMOD computer model of the patient before surgery. LifeMOD is currently being relied on as the major product design system for the top 6 orthopedic manufacturers for knee and spinal orthopedic devices.

Maryland eCare

Marc T. Zubrow, M.D., Medical Director
MarylandeCare_Logo
Nomination for their: Maryland eCare

Studies show improved patient outcomes and decreased lengths of stay for patients in intensive care units (ICU) managed by critical care physicians. Yet, due to a current and worsening shortage in the specialty, it’s difficult to impossible for some hospitals to have these physicians on-site 24 hours a day. In 2006, a group of independent hospitals joined together to find a solution to the critical care physician shortage, leveraging their combined resources to enhance care for their communities. Maryland eCare now connects physicians, nurses and patients via voice, camera and data feeds, enabling hospitals to provide the highest level of specialized care around the clock. The eCare program is designed to help reduce patient complications and improve outcomes in the ICU while enhancing the work environment for health care providers. The immediate benefit has been overwhelming satisfaction from both physicians and nurses who feel the eCare program enhances the quality of care provided and improves their quality of life.

Nomination for their: Practice Fusion

Fewer than 6% of doctors in the US have adopted complete Electronic Health Record systems in their practices according to the latest 2009 CDC reports. EHR use has been shown to improve the quality, efficiency and safety of medical care. This dismal technology adoption rate is largely due to a market for EHR systems dominated by bulky, difficult legacy technology costing $50,000 or more per physician. Practice Fusion provides a free, web-based Electronic Health Record system to any physician in the US. They eliminate the cost barriers to adoption by providing the EHR system for free with unlimited free support. They eliminate the technology barriers to adoption by making the EHR system web-based and accessible from any internet-connected computer. Practice Fusion includes charting, scheduling, e-prescribing, lab integrations, reporting, billing, secure messaging and an integrated Personal Health Record for patients. Practice Fusion has over 25,000 users and over 1 million patients utilizing the free EHR system.

RxTimerCap_logo
Nomination for their: Rx Timer Cap™
Patient adherence is one of the most important and challenging issues facing healthcare professionals and patients. In fact, adherence to medication dosage instructions affects 50% of patients and is a primary determinant of treatment success. The patented Rx Timer Cap™ is a solution to patient adherence and will be initially dispensed through retail pharmacies where more than 3.8 billion prescriptions per year are repackaged into vials. The Rx Timer Cap fits on the original prescription bottle, replacing the standard closure with one incorporating a digital LCD readout that tells patients exactly how long it’s been since they took their last dose. Whether medications are for maintenance or symptomatic requirements, just looking at the cap tells the patient the information they need to know to make an informed medication administration decision. The results of a study show that patients experienced an astounding 33.9% increase in compliance with dosage instructions with the Rx Time Cap.

Sajix, Inc.

Prasada Rao Pyala, CEO
Sajix_Logo
Nomination for their: Overcome Healthcare Audit and Compliance

In the event of a user’s unavailability in the clinical/hospital facility due to his personal reason, providing alternate user access is a major issue. For example, if a person working in the emergency room was sick, getting an alternate user to access his or her files is problematic. In response to this problem, Sajix has created emergency user access functionality within HIS. Sajix creates emergency users with approvers and monitors for these users. They then assign these emergency users to users who will be handling the breakglass functionality. This functionality will allow them to handle the breakglass situation in a quick manner. At the same time, Sajix can track all the activities/changes performed by the user during the breakglass situation. They then report to the monitors to check whether the user has not deviated from the breakglass functionality. This will save a lot of time, and will better the monitoring functionality of HIS.

XIFIN, Inc.
Category: Healthcare IT  & Telecom Technology
Lale White, Executive Chairman and CEO
Nomination for their: XIFIN Revenue Cycle Management

Revenue Cycle Management is one of those overloaded terms that many vendors use, but can mean as little as submitting a claim. While traditional billing software has attempted to improve billing operations through incremental enhancements, there is a limit to its effectiveness, especially since it does not address changes to process and resource management. XIFIN’s revolutionary approach to process optimization is very different – taking a holistic view of laboratory billing, including workflow design and automation, deep integration with third party technologies, and expert services and consulting. XIFIN billing system doesn’t just improve upon an already broken process, it provides an entirely new framework for your laboratory's revenue cycle management. Because the XIFIN billing system was designed as a web-based application, laboratories are no longer required to maintain the expensive IT hardware and software infrastructure necessary to run a secure, enterprise-class laboratory billing system.
