Osmetech's eSensor® XT-8 System detects multiple genetic variations that identify
patients at risk for warfarin sensitivity, thus allowing
estimation of the
optimal and safe dose of warfarin, the world’s most widely-used oral anticoagulant to prevent blood clots, heart attacks, and stroke (over 30 million
prescriptions in the U.S. in 2004). Its
use also results in a
high rate of severe
and potentially
life-threatening
adverse effects with
70~100 severe
bleeding events
for
every 1000 patients treated per year. The eSensor system
utilizes
electrochemical
detection-based DNA microarray
technology to
genotype multiple
alleles that
correlate with
therapeutic warfarin
dose and with the
frequency of adverse
effects from
warfarin
over-dosage. |
