Here are IDC's top ten predictions for information access software and solutions (which include business intelligence, search and retrieval, text mining, content management, compliance, and data warehousing software):
1. Demand for access to information anywhere, anytime, from any device will spur development of products that can automatically recognize devices and format information and deliver it securely to users, no matter their location or device.
2. Business intelligence applications and business process automation will merge to become intelligent process automation.
3. Applications for search/discovery and business intelligence will begin to offer overlapping capabilities. >> (Business Wire, 3/20/06)

Wi-Fi to Flourish in North America & Asia-Pacific
Currently, municipal Wi-Fi networks cover about 1,500 square miles worldwide. But according to a new report from ABI Research, by 2010 the area covered will increase to 126,000 square miles -- an area larger than the country of Poland or the state of New Mexico. The bulk of the new Wi-Fi growth will occur in North America and the Asia-Pacific region, and to serve these burgeoning networks more than one million wireless mesh routers will be shipped in 2010. According to the report, four significant trends are energizing this emerging market:
*Many local governments wish to deploy municipal broadband networks for public safety and increased government efficiency.
*Alternative ISPs see mesh networking as enabling their own broadband service facilities to compete with incumbent service providers.
*Wireless mesh networking technology is seen as an efficient and cost-effective means of providing broadband access to underserved areas. This will be particularly true as the municipal Wi-Fi trend moves from larger cities into smaller towns.
*Potentially, wireless mesh networking technology can serve as a competitive tool for cable operators. (eMarketer Daily, 3/22/06)

Youngsters Gain Long-Term Benefits From Time Online
More than half of U.S. children surveyed (aged 6 to 11) were spending time online every month, and many of them every day, according to a Mediamark Research report. Meanwhile, a new paper from Professor Henry Jenkins of MIT and the New Media Literacies Project contends that young online users are developing the skills, knowledge and self-confidence they need to fully participate in the world around them. Citing teens' skillful use of all things digital, Jenkins said, "Social connectivity, creativity and learning take place through these various media-related experiences." These new literacies enable collaboration and knowledge-sharing with large-scale communities. "Right now, our schools are still training autonomous problem-solvers. But as students enter the workplace, they are increasingly being asked to work in teams, drawing on different sets of expertise and collaborating to solve problems." (eMarketer Daily, 3/21/06)

U.S. Biz Owners Must Encourage Math & Science Students
Carlos M. Gutierrez, the 35th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, recently commented on U.S. innovation and education:
*2/3 of R&D is within the private sector - we need to protect the intellectual capital, encourage engineers and scientists to continue to work and pursue advances in technology and innovation.
*Manufacturers report there are not enough graduates to meet current and future needs. It is critical to encourage American students to pursue careers in science, math and engineering.
*Last year the U.S. graduated 70,000 students in math and science; India graduated 350,000. China also graduates hundreds of thousands every year.
*Manufacturers can help by volunteering at the school level - going into the schools and universities, helping to show the benefits of a career in math and science. (Business Wire, 3/22/06)
