TECHNOLOGY TRENDS

Analysts Makes Digital Forecasts
A variety of projections have been made recently regarding growth in digital fields:
*Internet:  B
y the end of 2007 there will be over 1.3 billion Internet users worldwide, Morgan Stanley estimates. The U.S. remains the single largest Internet market in the world with 181.9 million Internet users in 2006, but China is likely to take the lead before the decade is out. By 2008, two-thirds of the U.S. population ages three and older will be Internet users, and this will rise to over 70% of the population by 2011, according to an eMarketer analyst. (eMarketer Daily, 2/13/07)
*IPTV:  The number of households worldwide paying for IPTV services will rise from 3.3 million in 2006 to 40.9 million in 2011, reports Strategy Analytics. However, the report also predicts that "subscribers" to IPTV will not pay directly for programming, but will use IPTV at no extra charge as part of a package of bundled broadband services. (eMarketer Daily, 2/1/07)

*Cellular:
The number of cellular connections will reach 3 billion before the end of 2007, according to the latest figures from Wireless Intelligence, having passed 2.5 billion in September 2006. WI analysts expect that the majority of the growth will continue to come from the Asia-Pacific region, which is expected to add up to more than 1.2 billion connections and account for 40% of the world's cellular growth for the year. Overall, world market penetration will rise from an estimated 41% at the end of 2006 to 47% by the end of 2007. (eMarketer Daily, 2/1/07)
*Broadband:
The worldwide total of DSL and cable broadband users will grow by an average of 9% annually over the next five years, reaching 480 million subscribers by 2012, according to new data from ABI Research. Also, broadband via DSL will grow more quickly than cable because it can leverage existing telecommunications infrastructures, leading to lower prices and greater ease of deployment. (eMarketer Daily, 2/14/07)
