California Impacted
Disproportionately by Offshoring
At
least 17% of computer programming, software engineering and
data entry jobs are likely to be offshored between 2004 and
2015 in areas like Boston, San Francisco and San Jose,
according to a new study from the Brookings Institution,
which also named Orange County as being vulnerable to
offshoring. However, the study didn't find other areas in
Southern California more vulnerable than the average loss
for the rest of the nation. (socaltech.com TechNews,
2/23/07)
50% of All Autos Will be
"Connected" by
2011
Half of all
cars worldwide will have cellular network connectivity by
2011, according to a new report from Berg Insight AB, which
expects the growth to foster a "massive market" for the
wireless M2M and mobile broadband industries. Two
strong trends that are driving demand for wireless M2M and
mobile broadband are: *more auto manufacturers are following
GM OnStar, incorporating telematics units as standard
equipment in their vehicles; and *the integration of high speed
download packet access (HSPA)
in notebook PCs is gaining momentum as mobile operators
launch high-speed HSPA networks. Some
23
million M2M and mobile broadband data devices will be
shipped worldwide this year, growing to over 100 million in
2011, Berg Insight projects. (M2M, 2/26/07)

North America to be Largest
VoIP over Wi-Fi Market
VoIP over
Wi-Fi lets callers use their mobile phones without a mobile
network, relying instead on Wi-Fi hotspots. North America
will see the largest global share of these equipment
revenues, at 43%, followed by the Europe, Middle East and
Africa (EMEA) and Asia-Pacific regions, with about 25% share
each, according to Juniper Research.
(eMarketer
Daily, 2/26/07)

PDAs See Record Shipments in
2006
Worldwide PDA
shipments reached a record of 17.7 million units in 2006, an
increase of 18.4% from 2005, according to Gartner Inc. Also,
60% of all PDAs shipped in 2006 offered cellular
connectivity, up from 47% in 2005.
