Google Points to Digital
Millennium Copyright Act
Google is confident its popular video-sharing
site YouTube and other web services Google offers have
strong legal protections under current copyright law,
company attorneys said on Tuesday. Media conglomerate Viacom
ended six months of thinly veiled threats of legal action
against YouTube earlier on Tuesday with a $1-billion lawsuit
that accuses Google and YouTube of “massive intentional
copyright infringement." But Google and YouTube lawyers said
their actions are squarely within the protections offered by
the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998 and they
were prepared to defend the company aggressively. The DMCA
has served as the legal standard defining U.S. copyright law
in the digital age. It limits liability for firms that act
quickly to block access to pirated materials once they are
notified by copyright holders of specific infringement. (KenRadio's

Worldwide Internet
Use Up 10%; China to Overtake U.S.
Nearly 750 million people ages 15 and older used the Internet
worldwide in January 2007, up 10% over January 2006,
according to new data from comScore Media Metrix. India, the
Russian Federation and China all saw heavy Internet user
growth in 2006, growing 33%, 21% and 20%, respectively.
China now has the world's second-largest Internet
population, with 87 million users ages 15 and older. The
U.S. had 153 million users ages 15 or older in January 2007.
Meanwhile, an eMarketer senior analyst estimates that China
will have the world's largest Internet market in number of
Internet users by the end of the decade.
eMarketer's
numbers are based on data from the International
Telecommunication Union and are not limited to users ages 15
and older. They also are full-year estimates, rather than
just one-month snapshots. eMarketer put the total number of
Internet users worldwide at 1.1 billion in 2006. (eMarketer

Mobile Computing Market Forecast at
$88.9 Billion by 2011
The global market for mobile computing will reach more than $88.9
billion by 2011, up from $63.5 billion in 2006, according to
a new report from BCC Research. Notebook and laptop computer
sales will reach $69.2 billion by the end of 2011, up from
$53.7 billion in 2006. These portable computers will account
for more than 96% of the mobile computing market in 2011, up
from 84% in 2006. Smartphones will have the highest growth
rate of any mobile computing sector through 2011 with a
15.7% CAGR, reaching almost $17.8 billion, up from $8.6
billion in 2006.
By 2011,
office-related, communications and global-positioning
software will make up over two-thirds of all applications
installed in handheld devices and mobile phones. (eMarketer
Daily, 3/9/07)

Fiber-Optic-Delivered
Internet to Triple in Volume
The number of U.S. households subscribing to fiber-optic-delivered
Internet services will increase from three million in 2007
to 18 million by the end of 2011, according to Parks
Associates.
The study
covered all types of fiber-optic Internet connections,
including fiber-to-the-home, -curb and -premises.

IPTV Revenue to Hit $23.5 Billion
by 2010
Revenues from pay TV, mobile video, DVD, broadband video and
theater/box office receipts will reach $277 billion by 2010,
up from less than $200 billion in 2006, according to iSuppli
Corporation.
Pay-TV
services, especially from Internet protocol television, will
drive much of the growth. IPTV is the fastest-expanding
segment of the pay-TV market, with revenues expected to
increase to $23.5 billion in 2010, rising at a CAGR of 103%
from $681 million in 2005.
(eMarketer Daily, 3/12/07)

Word-of-Mouth Necessary for a
Successful Blog
Two-thirds of blog readers discover blogs by links on other blogs,
according to a new report by Vizu Answers and Ad Age. Recommendations account for another 23% of blog finds. The fact that blog awareness is effectively spread by word-of-mouth
is key for anyone using one in a campaign. Not only can you
not build it and expect them to come, you cannot even build
it and optimize it for search and expect them to come. Blog
launches must be accompanied by links on established blogs,
and some good recommendations from established, influential
bloggers. (eMarketer
Daily, 3/7/07)
