Venture Backed IPOs Raise $1.2B in Q107
U.S. venture-backed companies raised $1.2 billion in 13 IPOs in the first quarter, according to Dow Jones -- double the amount raised a year ago. The number of IPOs was the most completed in a single quarter for the IT category since the third quarter of 2004. Google Brings Search to Voice Calls
Google has introduced Google Voice Local Search, a free 411 service that users can call to request information on local businesses. The system is automated and uses voice recognition to determine what the caller is seeking. "Goog-411" (nicknamed after the service's phone number, 1-800-GOOG-411) offers users the ability to find businesses of nearly any ilk and connects callers directly when they find the information they're looking for. Goog-411 also offers the ability to receive that information via text message to a mobile phone. Simply saying the words "text message" to the automated system after receiving query results will prompt the system to send the user an SMS with those same results. Lesser-Known Cities Offer Outsourcing Alternatives
India is famous as a destination for outsourcing, but since it is a rather large country, where exactly in the subcontinent should prospective service purchasers look for suppliers? The usual top picks are Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai, but according to outsourcing advisory firm Alsbridge a number of Indian cities have the potential to become outsourcing hotspots for major worldwide corporations: Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mangalore, Nagpur, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Visakhapatnam. Cell Phones Continue to Evolve
The cell phone world is moving beyond communications into the transaction space. Clairmail and Canadian telco TELUS have teamed to bring online banking on-the-go. Customers will be able to check their balance, transfer money between accounts, securely confirm transactions, and pay bills with their mobile devices.  Meanwhile, Baruch College, a City University of New York school, teamed up with Rave Wireless to launch the AirBaruch mobile program. Currently over 4,000 students, or one fourth of Baruch's total enrollment, use their cell phones to receive alerts, check availability of amenities on campus, and take real-time surveys and quizzes as part of the class curriculum. Students opt-in to the program by registering their phone numbers on the college Web site. There are plans to expand into access to recorded lectures and check the availability of computer labs.
