There was over $1.15 billion in venture capital deals

to a recent analysis of the socalTECH.com venture database.

Venture Backed IPOs Raise $1.2B in Q107
U.S. venture-backed companies raised $1.2 billion in 13 IPOs
in the first quarter, according to Dow Jones -- double the
amount raised a year ago. The number of IPOs was the most
completed in a single quarter for the IT category since the
third quarter of 2004. Also, 95 M&A transactions were
completed in the first quarter of 2007, down from 111 in the
first quarter of 2006 but still totaling $9.39 billion in
value. (socaltech.com TechNews, 4/2/07)

Blogs Rank Among Top Web Sites
According to the "State of the Live Web" report from Technorati, 22 of the 100 most popular Web sites in the fourth quarter of 2006
were blogs, up from 12 in the third quarter. Technorati
currently tracks 70 million blogs — up from 35 million blogs
less than a year ago — and claims 120,000 new blogs are
being created every day. Blogging is an international phenomenon, with 37% of all blogs in
Japanese. English-language blogs rank second, at 33%, and
Chinese is the third-most-blogged language, at 8%. Blogging has
even caught on in Iran. Farsi is now the 10th-most-popular
blogging language. (eMarketer

Google
Brings Search to Voice Calls
Google
has introduced Google Voice Local Search, a free 411 service
that users can call to request information on local
businesses. The system is automated and uses voice
recognition to determine what the caller is seeking.
"Goog-411" (nicknamed after the service's phone number,
1-800-GOOG-411) offers users the ability to find businesses
of nearly any ilk and connects callers directly when they
find the information they're looking for. Goog-411 also
offers the ability to receive that information via text
message to a mobile phone. Simply saying the words "text
message" to the automated system after receiving query
results will prompt the system to send the user an SMS with
those same results. (KenRadio's Daily Tech News Clicks,

Lesser-Known
Cities Offer Outsourcing Alternatives
India is
famous as a destination for outsourcing, but since it is a
rather large country, where exactly in the
subcontinent should prospective service purchasers look for
suppliers? The usual top picks are Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai, but according
to outsourcing advisory firm Alsbridge a number of Indian cities have the potential to become outsourcing
hotspots for major worldwide corporations:
Ahmedabad, Chennai,
Hyderabad, Kochi,
Kolkata, Mangalore, Nagpur,
Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and
Visakhapatnam. (eMarketer

Cell Phones
Continue to Evolve
The cell phone world is moving beyond communications into
the transaction space. Clairmail and Canadian telco TELUS
have teamed to bring online banking on-the-go. Customers
will be able to check their balance, transfer money between
accounts, securely confirm transactions, and pay bills with
their mobile devices.
Meanwhile,
Baruch College, a City University of New York school, teamed
up with Rave Wireless to launch the AirBaruch mobile
program. Currently over 4,000 students, or one fourth of
Baruch's total enrollment, use their cell phones to receive
alerts, check availability of amenities on campus, and take
real-time surveys and quizzes as part of the class
curriculum. Students opt-in to the program by registering
their phone numbers on the college Web site. There are plans
to expand into access to recorded lectures and check the
availability of computer labs. (1to1 Weekly, 4/9/07)

Linux
Heading to Mobile Phones
More than 127 million mobile phones will be enabled with commercial
Linux OS by 2012, up from 8.1 million in 2007, according to
ABI Research. Shipments of devices using Linux as a
real-time operating system replacement will pass 76 million
units in 2012, up from nearly zero in 2007. (eMarketer
Daily, 4/6/07)

Video
Resumes Get Attention
Nearly 90% of employers would watch a video resume if it were
submitted to them, according to Vault. Only 17% of employers
have actually viewed a video resume so far, but 56% think
that video will become a common addition to future job
applications. Over half of employers said that video resumes
would help them assess a candidate's professional
presentation and demeanor. Other respondents also thought
that video resumes could help them gauge job experience
(14%) and speaking manner (9%). More than 75% said they
preferred videos to run under two minutes. Half said under a
minute was plenty of time. (eMarketer
