China Seeks to Limit Game Hours
The Chinese government has clamped down on the amount of time youngsters can spend playing online games. Under-18s who play for more than three consecutive hours a day will have limits imposed on the amount of points they can score. Online game companies based in China have been given three months to install the so-called anti-addiction software, part of an on-going attempt to limit how long people are online. Online gaming is hugely popular in China. A recent report from the China National Children's Centre said that 13% of under-18s who used the web were addicted to online gaming. Beijing-based analyst firm CCID Consulting estimates that there are 17.8 million fee-paying gamers in China, about 20% of whom are under 20 years old. A further 10% are younger than 16. “Silicon Sandwiches" to Power Next-Gen PCs
Stacks of chips, one on top of the other, will power the next generation of super-fast PCs, IBM has announced. Laying chips vertically, instead of side by side, reduces the distance data has to travel by 1,000 times, making the chips faster and more efficient. IBM has said that it will start producing the compact silicon sandwiches in 2008. Intel previously announced that it is also developing similar vertical chip technology. Last year, the firm unveiled a chip with 80 processing cores and capable of more than a trillion calculations per second that used vertical stacking technology. Other firms, such as Tru-Si, have also developed techniques for creating 3D stacked chips.
