California Ranks First In Tech Employment Report
California has been ranked number one in terms of the number
of workers, job gains, and wages, according to the annual
Cyberstates report issued by AeA. The report, which tracks national and state
trends in high-tech employment, found that California high
tech workers had the highest average wages in the nation, at
$95,300. There were 14,400 jobs
gained between 2004 and 2005 in the state, bringing the
state's total high tech workers to 919,300. AeA's report was
based on data from 2005, the most current state data
available. (socaltech.com TechNews, 4/24/07)

Venture Grows in SoCal
The Southern California region is now second only to
Silicon Valley in venture capital investments, according to
a report from Ernst & Young LLP and Dow Jones VentureOne.
In
Q107, SoCal companies received $1.1 billion in funding, a
23% jump from the same period last year, the first time
SoCal investment has topped $1 billion in a single quarter
since 2000. More than $350 million of the $401 million
invested in Los Angeles was for information technology
concerns. Overall, California companies received $3.32
billion, a 12.5% increase in the amount of investments
compared with Q106. (L.A. Business Journal, 4/23/07)

Meanwhile, “Green" Venture Investments Hit $903M in Q1
North
American and European investors invested $903 million in
clean technology investments in Q107, according to a report
from Cleantech Venture Network, a group that focuses on
clean technology investments. Cleantech Venture Networks
said that it tracked $903 million in investments for the

Q406, and up 42% from Q106, when there was $634 million in

China Seeks to Limit Game Hours
The Chinese government has clamped down on the amount of time
youngsters can spend playing online games. Under-18s who
play for more than three consecutive hours a day will have
limits imposed on the amount of points they can score.
Online game companies based in China have been given three
months to install the so-called anti-addiction software,
part of an on-going attempt to limit how long people are
online. Online gaming is hugely popular in China. A recent
report from the China National Children's Centre said that
13% of under-18s who used the web were addicted to online
gaming. Beijing-based analyst firm CCID Consulting estimates
that there are 17.8 million fee-paying gamers in China,
about 20% of whom are under 20 years old. A further 10% are
younger than 16. (KenRadio's Daily Tech News Clicks,

“Silicon Sandwiches" to Power Next-Gen
PCs
Stacks of chips, one on top of the other, will power the
next generation of super-fast PCs, IBM has announced. Laying
chips vertically, instead of side by side, reduces the
distance data has to travel by 1,000 times, making the chips
faster and more efficient. IBM has said that it will start
producing the compact silicon sandwiches in 2008. Intel
previously announced that it is also developing similar
vertical chip technology. Last year, the firm unveiled a
chip with 80 processing cores and capable of more than a
trillion calculations per second that used vertical stacking
technology. Other firms, such as Tru-Si, have also developed
techniques for creating 3D stacked chips.

Meanwhile,
scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have
unveiled a prototype for a revolutionary new general-purpose
processor that they claim has the potential to clock
trillions of calculations per second -- Tera-op Reliable
Intelligently adaptive Processing System (Trips).
