Security Going Unused
Password security has
become a bigger issue within the last year, said 75% of
respondents to a study by DigitalPersona and Business
Performance Management Forum, and 77% said that a network
data breach could be critical or disastrous to their
company. More
than 25% of respondents currently have fingerprint readers
in notebooks or desktops. Yet fewer than half of firms that
have them (often embedded in laptops) are using the
technology.
Less than half of respondents had any formal security system
or policy to create an electronic audit trail. (eMarketer,

Gates:
"Online Services Top Priority" in His Last F/T Year
Bill Gates said recently that he intends to spend his
remaining full-time employment with Microsoft primarily
focused on developing online and advertising services. Gates
has said that he will work with the company full-time until
mid-2008. In his remaining months, his "biggest thing" will
be directed toward "search, buyers and sellers... going head
to head with companies including Google and Yahoo --
resulting in about a $2.7 billion increase in operating
expenses in its current fiscal year. According to Nielsen
NetRatings, in the month of March, Microsoft held a 10.1%
share on the search market, while Google held 51.3% and
Yahoo held 21.8%. (KenRadio's Daily Tech News Clicks,

80% of
Internet Users To Get Second Life
Gartner
predicts that 80% of active Internet users and Fortune 500
companies will have an avatar or presence in a virtual
environment like Second Life by the end of 2011.
Enterprise clients
should experiment with virtual environments, Gartner said,
but hold off on heavy investments until the environments
stabilize and mature. Gartner also offered five laws to
guide enterprises in their virtual ventures. First: Virtual
worlds are not games, but neither are they a parallel
universe (yet). Second: Behind every avatar is a real
person. Enterprise users must consider their corporate
reputations when dealing with avatars. Third: Be relevant
and add value. "Do not expect to undertake profitable
commercial activities inside most virtual worlds in the next
three years," said Steve Prentice of Gartner. Fourth:
Understand and contain the downside. Ask if virtual-world
activities undermine or influence branding in the real
world. Adult content is a large part of virtual economies,
so appropriate behavior and ethics must be considered.
Fifth: This is a long haul. Virtual environments have
developed through the convergence of social networking,
simulation and online gaming. The stability and scalability
of many new entrants are not yet established. (eMarketer
Daily, 4/27/07)
