Small Manufacturers Rank Leading Concerns
The general state of the economy, taxes, and the cost of
materials were the three leading concerns of small
manufacturing businesses during the second quarter of 2007,
according to the latest Small Business Research Board study.
Respondents to the nationwide poll ranked energy and fuel
costs at fourth, finding quality employees at fifth, and
healthcare costs - which had been the most significant issue
during Q107 - at sixth. The small business owners said
adding more automation or technology, as well as improving
existing automation would be their primary means for
enhancing productivity during the coming 12 to 24 months.
Improved staff training, hiring of additional employees and
incentive programs also were cited as important methods for
improving productivity.
The quarterly poll also measured interest in expanding
operations over the next 12 to 24 months: 29% percent said
they intend to do so. Of those respondents, 28% said they
are considering expanding at current locations, 21% said
they will add more products, 20% intend to increase customer
service, 16% plan to add more services, and 7% cited the
addition of locations.

U.S. VCs Wary of Offshore Investing
46% of U.S. venture capitalists polled reported making
offshore investments versus 64% of non-U.S. respondents who
said they invested outside their home countries, according
to the 2007 Global Venture Capital Survey. The study also
found that U.S. VCs avoided putting all their eggs in an
offshore basket. Two-thirds of U.S. VCs who have invested
abroad said that less than 5% of their capital under
management is in foreign markets and almost 80% of VCs
pegged the total at less than 10%. Questioned about where
U.S. VCs planned to expand globally, 34% said China, 24%
said India, and 11% Canada. Mark Heesen, president of the
National Venture Capital Association, said that though a
“significant minority" of VCs are looking to new markets, a
mass exodus of U.S. venture capital is not occurring. (www.nvca.org/pdf/VCSurvey07-PR-FINAL.pdf)
