How is Your Organization Using Social Technologies?
What’s Working? Why?
McKinsey & Company’s fifth annual survey (November 2011) on the way organizations use social tools and technologies shows that when integrated into the daily work of employees and adopted on a large scale, throughout a “networked enterprise,” they improve:
- Operations
- Financial performance, and
- Market share
For the 4,200 global executives surveyed, these new platforms have already reached critical scale in their organizations, and are fast transforming their business processes and raising organizational performance. Seventy-two percent of the survey respondents reported that their companies use at least one social technology, with 41% using blogs, and 50% using social networks.
After a brief presentation of key aspects of the survey, and some additional research, Members will share and discuss how their Organizations are using Social Technologies to modify and streamline their business processes and improve their corporate performance. We’ll also look to hear about the obstacles which had to be overcome to put these new technologies in place, how support for their adoption was built, and how – ultimately - rewards have been reaped.
As always, we'll look to hear - and discuss - "What's Keeping You Up Nights?" We'll also be serving as Strategic Advisory Board Members to John Tanner, Ph.D. of Tanner Research, Inc., as he makes his Featured Member Presentation.

John Tanner, Ph.D.
President and CEO
Tanner Research
John Tanner is President and CEO of Tanner Research, Inc., a 100 percent employee-owned company that develops and markets Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software tools to designers of integrated circuits. Tanner is among a handful of companies to be named to the "LA Fast 50" five years in a row.
|
|
Tanner Research currently employs about 50 people with revenues in the $10 million range. The largest division creates and markets EDA software tools for the design of integrated circuits. In addition to the EDA Division, Tanner Research also has other divisions, including Tanner Laboratories, which performs advanced electronic R&D under government DoD contracts. Areas of emphasis include mixed-signal integrated circuit design, image processing, MEMS (micromachine) design and nano-optics.
John is also trying to create a new business unit dedicated to sharing calendars and contact information among multiple PC, Mac, and smartphone users. Tanner Research acquired base technology from Palm in 2004 and is advancing it under the name ClearSync. In addition, John has licensed a new pogo stick design from Carnegie Melon University to Razor (the folding scooter company) and is helping Razor get it into production.
In October 2009, John suffered an unexpected, sudden cardiac arrest. Against long odds, John survived, recovered, and began learning about the causes, prevention, and reversal of this nations leading killer. He has incorporated what he has learned into his website (www.nusci.org) and is looking to build a non-profit organization to propagate the knowledge of preventing heart attacks.
John earned his BA degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, in 1979, his MS in Electrical Engineering from Caltech, in 1980, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Caltech, in 1986.
