2009 "Leadership in Innovation Awardee" & Keynote Presenter

Patrick Soon-Shiong, M.D.
Chairman & CEO of Abraxis Health

Patrick Soon-Shiong is truly a gift to 21st Century Healthcare.  Immigrating to America with only a med school degree from South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand, Patrick joined the faculty of UCLA in 1983, where he performed the first islet-cell transplant.  The named inventor on over 50 issued U.S. patents, Patrick has published 100+ scientific papers, and since leaving UCLA in 1991, he’s also founded two publicly traded pharmaceutical companies, Abraxis Bioscience, which brought to market Abraxane - the world’s first nanotechnology cancer-fighting drug, and American Pharma Partners, which he sold last year to Fresenius for $3.7 billion.

Earlier this year, Patrick founded Abraxis Health, a fully-integrated, next-generation, evidenced-based, personalized healthcare company dedicated to the discovery, development, validation and clinical application of diagnostics and therapeutics that are tailored to the specific molecular profile of patients, in order to offer safer and more effective treatments for critical illnesses.  He’s also established the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation, through which he and his family are focusing on charitable endeavors that will improve healthcare in America and the welfare of its patients.  Most recently he’s launched the National Coalition of Health Integration, with a vision to create a robust, accessible, integrated health information platform that supports the comprehensive management and exchange of biomedical data on a national scale.  Never one to be idle, Patrick sits on11 additional Boards of Directors, Trustees or Advisors, Presidents Councils or Steering Committees.  His significant achievements have been recognized internationally with innumerable prestigious Awards, including the J.W. Hyatt Award for Service to Mankind; and now, our highest honor: ABL’s Leadership in Innovation Award.
